Translating Human Rights in Education
This open-access monograph examines how Article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)—which enshrines the right to inclusive education—has been implemented in two very different contexts: Nigeria and Germany. Despite formal commitment to inclusive education, both nations have paradoxically upheld segregated schooling systems: Nigeria due to a lack of formal support, and Germany through long-established special-education institutions. By analyzing policy discourse in both countries, Biermann reveals how the promise of inclusive education is often sidelined in favor of entrenched special-education structures.
