Being a Presence for Students
This chapter explores two central themes Miller develops in his
philosophy of education: presences and morale. Miller argues
that a teacher has to establish presence to be effective, and this
chapter explores what presence in the classroom is. Then the
chapter turns to morale. Miller argues that in our modern age
we’ve lost morale, and he suggests that reclaiming presences in
the classroom can build student and teacher morale. This chapter
offers an overview that positions a reader to then appreciate
Miller’s notes on liberal education
