The Amorphophallus of Indonesia
Amorphophallus is one of the most iconic plant groups in the world. When members of the genus are in flower, crowds of people are attracted to view the majestic spectacle. In full bloom, the inflorescences emit a powerful, carrion-like smell to entice pollinating insects. This has given rise to the popular name of 'corpse flower (bunga bangkai. in the Indonesian language) for plants of the genus.
However, there is a common misconcept in the use of the name 'bunga bangkai'. The name is used to refer to species of two very different genera of plants, both native to Indonesia, namely the genus Amorphophallus and the genus Rafflesia. This book focuses only on the first of these, the genus Amorphophallus.
